Some information on the towns and areas listed.

Ricote:- A small town set in a fertile lemon and apricot growing valley tucked in by rugged hills. It has many monuments including the 300 year old town hall. Well known for its culinary dishes of wild game and its wine. The “Casco Antiguo” (old town) with its lanes, (not too steep) is of interest.

Campo de Ricote:- 20 klm. of undulating farmland, mainly used for growing almonds, figs, carob, olives etc. but where the famous Ricote wine is made. There are many scattered farmhouses and hamlets in this area. Some nicely restored, others waiting for your help.

Blanca:- Medium sized town with most amenities, also historic monuments. Remains of a castle set on craggy hilltop. “Casco antiguo” (antique quarter) with steep, narrow, winding lanes. Several large antique buildings being restored by the local authorities for town hall, hotel, training schools, rural hostels, etc. Very pleasant, pine lined, riverside promenade, and splendid extra large public park with exotic trees and shady palm lined riverside promenade. Of special interest, the small lake, (now being cleaned to use for water sports, with beaches for swimming, canoeing, boating, windsurf, etc.)

Ojos:- Extremely pretty, small town, with a river separating it from it's neighbouring town of Ulea. A very pleasant atmosphere. Fertile orange and lemon growing valley with a profusion of tidy palms, completely surrounded by rocky bluffs.

Most small towns have friendly mayors who are willing to help the stranger to settle in. They also endeavour to protect the countryside but allow the public to use the protected areas. (In the outskirts of most towns there are recreational areas with BBQ fireplaces, tables and benches for public use), hiking trails are well marked, canoeing and kayaking is permitted on the rivers and lakes, horse riding is encouraged, etc.

These towns are nicely situated, set in valleys surrounded by pine clad, public, hills, which deter mass urbanisations or industry yet only a few klm. from Abaran, Cieza and Archena (with it's spa) and the major motorways to Madrid, Murcia, Granada, Albacete and Alicante, (airport 45 min.) 1 hour to the beaches of Mar Menor, Gulf of Mazarron or Alicante.

VALLE DE RICOTE

The Ricote Valley was the last Moorish redoubt in Spanish Levante. This is one of the most beautiful and undiscovered parts of the fertile irrigated plains around the River Segura. The towns of Ricote, Ojós, Abarán, Blanca, Ulea, Villanueva del Segura and Archena, surrounded by fruit and citrus orchards, transport us to an ideal world. A fertile plain that clings to its Arab heritage, as shown by the numerous remains from this period, including its irrigation systems. Ricote maintains a rich gastronomical tradition in which the local wine is the protagonist. Blanca has retained its legacy as a producer of esparto grass. In Abarán, visitors can follow a route that will lead them to four of the many waterwheels, or "ñoras" as they are known in the area, which transport water from the river to irrigate the most distant plains. From this area the landscape changes and we enter a more open area famous for its fruit orchards, particularly peach, and its contrasting landscapes, making it particularly attractive for engaging in sports such as hiking, BTT or rock climbing. Other open-air sports that can be pursued here include rafting on the River Segura or horse-riding along routes offered by various horse riding centres. Visitors can find a range of accommodation in the form of typical rural properties, imbued with the wealth of pleasures offered by the Ricote Valley.
